echo and the boy

echo and the boy                                    June 22, 2016
i’ve been trying to tell you
trying to tell you
that i am but an echo
the woman who wasted away
wasted away to nothing
from a broken heart
all i can do
is echo back to you
your attention and affection

it would have been kinder had you
left my heart dried and dead
in the cliffs by the dunes
for in the cliffs and cañons
the voice of echo is strong
but no
in your cruelty
you fed and watered me
with your time and attention

boy from the nile valley
do you know what it is you have done
in putting a drop of life
in the withered heart of echo?
the withered heart of echo
where narcissus has killed her
with his selfishness
do you know what it is
you hold in your hands
and discard so quickly?
for echo was nothing
but pure love and loyalty
‘twas her own love and loyalty
that was her undoing
for she loved a man
who loved only himself

echo is now shy
and fast to flee to the rocks
when you take your eye
off her weakly beating heart
would you hold the heart of echo
you can never let go
for she will flee to the rocks
to the cañons and the cliffs
where narcissus cannot go
where he can never go
for there are no pools of to mirror
his reflection in the desert rocks

boy from the nile valley
do you know why you must
keep an eye on echo
always if you want to see
the loyalty she wraps in modesty?
echo does not know
what it is to show her soul
and have it seen and wanted
do you know why you must
keep echo’s hand in yours?
her heart is broken
but her hand is virgin
for her love loved only himself.
you have found the source of echo
boy from the nile valley
you have found the spring
of her love and loyalty.
i am but an echo my love
all i can do
is echo back to you
your kindness or your cruelty
your love or your indifference

all i can do
is echo back to you
how will i ever come to you
if you don’t come to me?

echo used to love unconditionally
until she became only an echo
a mirror of sound and wind
for that was all he wanted
to see and hear his own self

oh, boy from the nile valley
do you know how to love an echo
for herself as she is?

this is a mystery
do you know how to be worthy
of echo’s modesty and loyalty?
you cannot tame an echo
nor can you command her
and you must never never wait
for her to be the first to speak

do you know how to love an echo
as the creature God made her to be?
before she was only an echo
twisted by the vanity of men
echo was a woman, beautiful and free

i am trying to tell you
trying to tell you how
you make love to an echo
the soul of echo
lives in the cave
where the light cannot go
would you bring the echo close to you
you must go into her
she will try to hide
the mouth of this cave in the rocks
to bring the echo
to your arms, your pillows
you match her love, her loyalty
oh, boy from the nile valley
is this girl from the cave
too much for you to carry?
for how to you capture an echo
with a tongue the wind does not blow?

About m

My ego wants to think I'm a writer but my heart knows I'm just another one of God's Kids who sometimes has words to say. 2.5 human kids and 3 feline kids call me Mom. Or Mooooooom. Or mewom, depending which you ask. My most recent completed endeavor was finishing BA's in Religious Studies and American Studies. I don't remember what free time is but I think I like to spend it sleeping or playing in the mud on a river bank.
