What I Hear When You Say You’re Against Background Checks for Gun Purchases

Within hours of President Obama taking executive action to require some really basic, no-brainer, common-sense efforts towards curbing gun violence my news feeds exploded with people against these measures. For those unfamiliar with what happened he moved to close background check loop-holes, to strengthen the background check database relating to mental illness, and to fund efforts to combat illegal arms trading via the internet.

So, if any of those sound like a bad idea to you this tells me a few things about you. You either A) have a record that would prevent you from passing a background check, have a history of mental illness including harm to self or others, or engage in illegal arms dealing or B) want people who engage in illegal arms dealing, have a history of being diagnosed as mentally ill and likely to harm themselves or others, or have criminal records to be able to purchase guns.

If you are afraid “he’s coming for your guns” then you are probably too paranoid to be in possession of a gun in the first place.

If you don’t like background checks then you are probably not able to pass one. Or maybe you just want criminals to have more guns so you can pretend that you need one to defend yourself against them. Or maybe you stand to make a killing off of….killing.

If you want people with psychiatric histories of hurting people to purchase guns then you probably have such a history.

If you want to encourage illegal arms dealing then you must stand to profit from illegal arms dealing.

So thank you, dear friends, who shared with the world how much you hate these restrictions. Now I know who to stay the furthest away from. Now I know who you really are and what you really stand for.

About m

My ego wants to think I'm a writer but my heart knows I'm just another one of God's Kids who sometimes has words to say. 2 human kids and 3 feline kids call me Mom. Or Mooooooom. Or mewom, depending which you ask. I'm kinda-sorta busy being a student again; this time I signed myself up for a bizarre torture known as Graduate School. Theoretically in 4ish years I'll have earned some more nice letters to put with my name. Let's face it, I'm addicted to learning and probably need rehab to restore me to sanity and remove the obsession to read books. I don't remember what free time is but I think I like to spend it sleeping or playing in the mud on a river bank.
